Schnuck’s Markets Continues to Enforce Illegal Mask “Mandate”
Midwest grocery seems to make masks permanent
When St. Louis County Executive Sam Page attempted to impose an illegal mask mandate in July and, again, in September, Schnuck’s Markets—the area’s largest grocery store chain—obeyed with relish.
Since then, a judge has ruled mandates like the one Page tried to impose are illegal and unconstitutional. His ruling applies across the state.
On the heels of that court order, Missouri’s Attorney General issued a letter to all government subdivisions letting them know that any existing such mandates are null and void because they are illegal and unconstitutional.
You’d think a grocery store like Schnuck’s would have jumped at the chance to stop harassing and bullying their customers about face covers. You’d be wrong.
Even though Page’s mandate was never legal or constitutional, Schnuck’s, out of fear, enforced the order. Even after the County Council made it clear that the County Executive lacked the authority to impose such a mandate, Schnuck’s sided with Page in violation of the County Council and Missouri law.
Now, Schnuck’s is defying the court order and the Attorney General, seeking to win favor from the despotic Sam Page.
We asked Schnuck’s whether the would drop their mask requirement. Here’s what Tieman Gilbert, Customer Care Team Supervisor for Schnuck’s, told us:
“Following the [illegal and unconstitutional] facemask mandates for indoor spaces issued by St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Schnucks is requiring all teammates, customers and vendors — regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status — to wear face coverings in stores within the jurisdiction of St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Schnucks updated signage to note this city mandate, and is offering complimentary facemasks for customers. The requirement does allow exceptions for young children and those with medical conditions who are unable to wear a face covering.”
I understand that a private business is free to require customers to wear masks whether the customers intend to stage a hold-up or not. But if Schnuck’s wants even its non-criminal customers to wear masks, they should have the guts to say so.
Instead, the company blames the corrupt Sam Page for a policy that Schnuck’s wants to impose on its customers. This way, Schnuck’s can tell angry customers, “Don’t blame us; it’s Sam Page’s fault.”
Yes, Page issued an illegal and unconstitutional order. That’s on him. But Schnuck’s is about the only company in the region obeying the illegal mandate. That can’t be because of fear of Page’s wrath—Page is powerless at this point, and everybody knows it.
Schnuck’s simply wants it both ways: to mandate masks and to keep their customers. So they blame Page. Just like Rockwood (and many other woke) School District.
Again, I stopped shopping at Schnuck’s in July. I planned to return (when convenient for me) once they lifted the mask policy. But it appears masks are now a permanent requirement to shop at Schnuck’s, so I won’t be going back.
It’s sad that a good St. Louis company went down the woke Covidian path that’s bound to lead to its extinction.
Get woke, go broke.
